GOALS

Heart attack, stroke and pulmonary embolism, together, are responsible for more morbidity and mortality than cancer. Each represents a manifestation of thrombosis. However, thrombosis is not a diagnosis! Thrombosis has one or more underlying etiologies. As many as 60% of patients with myocardial infarction, 30% of patients with transient ischemic attack and stroke, 80% of patients with deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism and 60% of patients with recurrent miscarriage may be found to have underlying abnormalities of coagulation predisposing to thrombosis.

Unexplained bleeding may result from inherited blood coagulation abnormalities such as hemophilia and von Willebrand’s disease. A variety of acquired disorders such as disseminated intravascular coagulation and thrombocytopenia may also lead to bruising and bleeding.

Vascular diseases including atherosclerosis, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia and a number of other inherited and acquired disorders may result in either thrombosis or hemorrhage.

The focus of CALIFORNIA CLINICAL THROMBOSIS CENTER is patients with:

  • Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism
  • Unexplained or recurrent coronary thrombosis including early occlusion post coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Unexplained or recurrent transient ischemic attack or stroke
  • Unexplained or recurrent peripheral arterial thrombosis
  • Coronary, cerebral or peripheral arterial thrombosis at age less than 60
  • Retinal artery or vein thrombosis
  • Family history of arterial or venous thrombosis
  • Thrombosis or hemorrhage after minor provocation
  • Association of arterial and venous thrombosis
  • Thrombosis at unusual sites
  • Deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism during pregnancy or postpartum
  • Recurrent miscarriage
  • Warfarin-induced skin necrosis
  • Unexplained hemorrhage
  • Easy bruising
  • Post-operative hemorrhage

At CALIFORNIA CLINICAL THROMBOSIS CENTER we provide comprehensive consultation, patient management and comprehensive laboratory testing. In the complex and rapidly evolving medical specialty of Thrombosis, Hemostasis and Vascular Medicine, few centers offer such complete services. Clinical and Laboratory evaluation to precisely diagnose these disorders may involve complex and costly laboratory studies. CALIFORNIA CLINICAL THROMBOSIS CENTER is uniquely designed to guide the patient through the appropriate testing sequence to arrive at a precise diagnosis, leading to specific therapy.

The approach to diagnosis, selection of diagnostic laboratory studies and the approaches to treatment and prevention are based upon the recommendations of the International Academy of Thrombosis, Hemostasis and Vascular Medicine, The American College of Chest Physicians, the International Consensus Conference, clinical trial data and the recommendations of recognized international experts. Utilizing the recommendations of the National Cholesterol Education Program, the Joint National Commission on Hypertension, the American Diabetic Association, the American Heart Association, the American College of Chest Physicians, the American Medical Association and a number of national and international organizations, CALIFORNIA CLINICAL THROMBOSIS CENTER has also developed a comprehensive algorithmic approach to prevent and treat atherosclerotic vascular disease.
